Your Committee

Catherine Noble (Co-President, Masters)(incomplete)

I am completing a Masters in Public and International Law and last year served on the PLSA as the Social Justice Officer and Vice-President (Masters).  I have seen the value of being a part of events that bring students together socially, particularly Masters students who can find themselves disconnected from one another.  As the Co-President this year, I am keen to ensure that all postgraduate law students have an opportunity to come together and that their voices are heard.

Bec Goodbourn (Co-President, PhD)(incomplete)

I am a second year PhD student enrolled in Arts and Law.  My social and academic involvement in the Law School last year was facilitated through the enthusiasm and generosity of other students.  This year, I want to give some of that back by offering a diverse range of opportunities that will capitalise on the dynamic changes that are currently energising the law school.  As a student representative, I will always be happy to hear suggestions, comments and feedback regarding the committee or university life in general.

Marium Khalid (Vice-President, Masters)(incomplete)

I am pursuing a Master of Laws and my association with PLSA spans over a year now since I served as the International Representative for the Master students for the year 2008. Needless to say, my role within the PLSA made it easier for me to settle into university life as it brought together a large community of students committed to providing an environment conducive for international students. As the Vice- President for Master students for the year 2009, I intend to strive to provide for a complete university experience that postgraduates owing to the intensive nature of their program invariably tend to miss out on. In addition to academic commitments, it is immensely important that there are opportunities that encourage student interaction. For such an endeavour, all students are welcome to come forward and to use PLSA as a platform for the materialisation of their ideas and suggestions.

Virginie J. Tassin (Vice-President, PhD)(incomplete)

I am undertaking a PhD in the Cotutelle program with the Law School and The Sorbonne University in Paris, France, working on the extension of the continental shelf under the supervision of J-M Sorel, S. Kaye and A. Mitchell. Before joining Melbourne Law School, I built up a strong international profile by working with EADS Astrium in France, Blake Dawson in Sydney, The French Consulate in Vietnam and recently as a consultant for the World Health Organisation. I hold a Research Masters of International Economic Law, First class Honours, from the Sorbonne University and a Graduate Diploma of Commerce from Sydney University. I also hold a certificate of International public Law from the Hague Academy of International Law and as well as a certificate of a pluridisciplinary programme of the European University awarded last year. I recently was admitted, as the first law student of Melbourne University, to the Certificate of Advanced Learning and Leadership from the School of Graduate Research of Melbourne University.

George Kailis (Treasurer)(incomplete)

I am entering my second year of my PhD. Last year I was based in Sydney, and after having studied largely by myself for a year, I am keen to support interaction and mutual support amongst students. As Treasurer of the Association I will be providing some of the administrative support necessary so that our committee can focus on supporting research students and creating an enhanced personal and professional environment in which to study and interact.

Mickaël Ho Foui Sang (Secretary)(incomplete)

I am a first year PhD candidate enrolled under a joint supervision program between Melbourne Law School and the University of Paris-Ouest Nanterre. Coming from a different culture in many regards, my integration in Melbourne has been highly facilitated by academic and social events organised at the Law School. As a member of the PLSA Committee, I am now willing to take an active part in the faculty life.

Meg Brodie (Social Justice Officer) (incomplete)

My postgraduate study at Melbourne Uni started as a Masters by Coursework and has ended up as a PhD! I am writing my thesis on National Human Rights Institutions as agents of change, with case studies of the experiences of the Mongolian and Indian Human Rights Commissions. I am passionate about providing avenues for people to serve others and to that end I sit on the Oaktree Foundation Board and was the founding director of Global Emerging Leaders. I hope that in 2009 we can use the PLSA as one vehicle to get people involved in creating change.

James Parker (Web and Communications)(incomplete)

I’m a first year PhD student and very recent arrival in Melbourne from the UK. Given that I’m affiliated with the centre for Media and Communications Law, I guess it makes sense that I ended up as the PLSA’s communications officer. The aim for this year is to transform the PLSA’s website into a genuinely useful tool for postgraduate students at the faculty, a sort of one stop shop for all your academic and social needs. In keeping with that goal, please feel free to get in touch if there’s something you think people need to know about. I’ll do my best to get it up on the net and begin spreading the word.

Ariel Cohen (Media and Events)(incomplete)

I am a full time LLM student and your PLSA Events Officer. I was admitted to practice and graduated with Grad. Dip. Legal Practice and LLB/ International Relations degrees in 2008.  If you have any ideas for getting us post-grads together, regardless of the setting, I would love to hear it.

Roisin Burke (International Student Representative)(incomplete)

I am a first year PhD student at the Asia Pacific Centre for Military Law here at the Law Faculty. I am the International Student Representative for the Postgraduate Law Student Association. I came here from Ireland last year, so I can relate to difficulties that can arise for international students who are new to Australia and the University. It is my hope this year to help international student integrate into the academic and social community here at the law school, and get the most out of their time here. I will also be available to provide assistance and support to international students with concerns which might arise for either in general or individually.

Nara Ganbat (General Member)(incomplete)

I am a LLM by Coursework student. As an international student from a non-English speaking country, I share common problems with plenty of students at the Law School. With my ideas and thoughts, I am eager to echo the voice of the international students at the PLSA, while enhancing my Melbourne experience.

John Simpkins (General Member)(incomplete)

I am first-year PhD student just settling in to life in Melbourne. As a General Member of the PLSA, I hope to serve as a resource on issues concerning international students as well as postgraduate students here with their families. I am looking forward to being actively involved in the life of the Law School.

Angus Frith (General Member)

I am a third year PhD student researching the sustainability of Aboriginal corporations.  In addition, I have been a member of the Victorian bar for ten years, practising mainly in the native title area.  I have joined the PLSA in order to be able to get to know more research students and to contribute something to the issues that face us all as students.  I feel it is an important way of engaging with the Law School, students, and the academic process.
